Aporrhais pespelecani

Pelican ( Aporrhais pespelecani )

The pelican ( Aporrhais pespelecani ) is a marine snail that is found in the northeastern Atlantic from Iceland to Morocco and in the Mediterranean on mud bottoms at depths from 10 to 180 meters. The worm is also found in the North Sea, the Kattegat and the English Channel.

Features

The pelican is up to 5 cm long. The outer lip of the case mouth is pulled in adult animals to several long points and thus similar to a Schwimmvogelfuß. The light brown, reddish brown or yellowish housing has eight to ten whorls and is gerippelt.

Way of life

Pelikan feet usually live buried in sandy soil and feed on fine food particles that they filter from the water stream flowing through their gills. Move them away, so they crawl a little bit and then pull the housing with a jerk. They multiply which hatch planktonic veliger larvae by eggs.
