Apoyeque

The Chiltepe peninsula beyond the Lake Managua. The horizontal edge of the Apoyeque caldera is slightly right of center visible.

The volcanic complex of Apoyeque located on the peninsula Chiltepe, which extends into the southern part of Lake Managua in Nicaragua.

The peninsula is part of the pyroclastic shield volcano Chiltepe, one of the three major ignimbrite shield volcanoes of the volcanic chain of Nicaragua. Inside the Apoyeque a volcanic caldera is filled with a diameter of 2.8 km and a depth of 400 meters. Immediately southeast of the volcano is that with a lake filled Maar Xiloá having an area of 2.5 x 3 miles. The lava dome Talpetatl arose between the Laguna Xiloá and Lake Managua. 6,100 years ago, the Laguna Xiloá pyroclastic flows were ejected with a volume of 1.9 cubic kilometers in the area, covering a wide surrounding area. Another powerful eruption occurred around 50 BC with the ejection of about 18 cubic kilometers of tephra.
