In the Palouse Prairie in Idaho the Indian tribe of the Nez Percé, who is the only known for having operated a systematic breeding horses lived. Derived from the breeding area, the Appaloosa also got its name. In a legendary escape the Nez Perce tried to escape in 1877, the destruction by the white man, but ultimately failed. On this trek much of the horse lost his life, leaving only a small population could be maintained.

The breed remains one of the American Quarter Horse and Paint Horse to the top horses of North America and has spread their popularity beyond the borders back to the Old World.
