Appelscha

Appelscha ( Frisian: Appelskea ) is a Frisian village in the municipality Ooststellingwerf (Netherlands), with around 5000 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2007). The village lies on the edge of the national park Drenthe- Friese Wold and has eleven Rijksmonumente.

History

In documents with the Bishopric of Utrecht ( Dutch: Utrecht Sticht, also: Aartsbisdom Utrecht ) was first mentioned in 1247, the village " Appels " and inventory from a small number of farms and the hamlets " Aekinga ", " Terwisseha " and " De Bult ". Around 1450, dikes were built around the water to fight back from the peat soils to protect the fields. The present village was built around 1827 with the influx of thousands of workers who urgently to moor colony ( Dutch: Turfwinning or Vervening ) were used. The poor social conditions for workers led in 1888 to a great strike, the still more followed. This was the beginning of organized strikes of anarchism and socialism in the Netherlands and the place was regarded as a stronghold of radical socialism and anarchism.

In the vicinity of Appelscha, in today's campsite " Ter Vrijheidsbezinning " which Pinksterlanddagen held since 1933.

Appelscha lies on the border of a large forest area ( Bosgebiet ) of around 4000 acres with small lakes and moorland. The Drenthe- Friese Wold was born in 1900 with pasture, woodland and farmland. Today, the village is held primarily known as a tourist destination with the National Park in the children's activities, readings, book markets, open air theater, workshops, hikes, video and music performances. In addition, there are golf and tennis facilities, as well as street markets.
