The genus Appendicula from the orchid family (Orchidaceae) consists of about 136 species. The plants grow mostly epiphytic, they are found in tropical Asia.

Description

The Appendicula species grow sympodial. The rather thin shoots are branched in some species, its cross section can be round or compressed. The shoot axis is densely covered with two rows arranged leaves. The leaf bases include the shoot and cover it completely, there is a separating tissue between leaf base and leaf blade. In some species, the leaf blades are rotated so that they all lie in one plane. The closely with several small, resupinierten flowers occupied inflorescences arise laterally from the leaf axils or are terminally, in some species both. The flowers are white, greenish or pink colored. The petals are not fused together, but form the lateral sepals and the lip together with the extended base of the column ( pillar ) a short sac. The lip is simple or three-lobed at the base and has a backward-looking appendage. At the end of the short column is the stamen with six about club-shaped pollinia into two groups. These are one or two stalks with a common small viscid disc ( Viscidium ) connected. An elongated, usually zweigelapptes rostellum separates the stamen of the scar.

Dissemination

The species of the genus Appendicula are widespread in tropical Asia. To the northwest, the area attracts along the Himalayan southern slopes, facing southeast southern China, Indo-China and the Indonesian archipelago, one species is reached even the north of Australia. A wide variety of species found in Sumatra and New Guinea.

They are mostly epiphytic plants growing more humid and seasonally dry tropical forests, some species preferred on rocks or terrestrial growing.

Systematics and botanical history

The genus Appendicula is counted for Eriinae subtribe within the tribe Podochileae. Related genera are Chitonochilus, Poaephyllum and Podochilus.

Appendicula was described in 1825 by Carl Ludwig Blume, the name refers to the characteristic appendage on the lip.
