Appenwihr
Appenwihr ( German Appenweier ) is a commune ( as at 1 January 2011) with 602 inhabitants in the department of Haut-Rhin in the Alsace region. It belongs to the community association Pays de Brisach.
Geography
Appenwihr is located at Hardt, a wooded area in Alsace, in the center of the plain between the Ill and the Rhine, between the towns of Colmar ( 11 km northwest ) and Neuf- Brisach (7.5 km east).
History
In 884 the town was first mentioned in a deed of Charles the Fat. In the Thirty Years' War, the town was completely destroyed. 1752 Appenwihr was again, this time due to a large fire that destroyed. After it was bombed and destroyed again, this was Appenwihr on February 5, 1945, three days after the capture of Colmar, liberated by the American allies.
