Apple Valley is a city in Dakota County in the U.S. state of Minnesota. It lies about 25 kilometers south of Saint Paul and has around 45,000 inhabitants.

Geography

Apple Valley is located in the south of the metropolitan area of the Twin Cities. According to the United States Census Bureau, the area of the city is 45.9 square miles, of which 1.0 square miles of water.

History

The area of today's Apple Valley was settled in the 1850s by European immigrants. On April 6, 1858, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners, the Union Township. As in 1858, the Commission met again and the new boundaries set, the new Lebanon Township was established. On 11 May 1858, the first town meeting was held. 1881 lived in the township of 252 inhabitants.

In the 1950s the development of the township began to town. After the number of inhabitants in 1960 was 585, new development areas have been identified and developed. In 1968 it was decided by a vote of the founding of a village called Apple Village. On January 1, 1969, the new mayor and four councilors took up their work. 1974 Apple Valley received its town charter. Apple Valley developed as a suburb of the Twin Cities one of the fastest growing cities in Minnesota, which weakened only in the 1990s due to the construction areas becoming scarce.

The opened in 1978, Minnesota Zoo is a zoological garden with approximately 2,200 animals. Located on the grounds of the zoo is also an IMAX theater.

According to the census in 2000 living in Apple Valley 45 527 people in 16,344 households and 12,405 families. The population density is 368.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial sits down the population made up of approximately 92 percent white population, and smaller minorities.

In 42.5% of the 16,344 households living children under the age of 18, 63.7 % live in married couples, and in 9.0 % live single women and 24.1 % are non family households. 19.3 % of all households were made up of individuals and 4.0% had someone living alone over 65 years.

In relation to the entire city, the population is composed of 29.7 % under the age of 18, 7.2 % from 18 to 24, 33.1% between 25 and 44 years, 24.4% between 45 and 64 years and 5.5% over 65 years. The median is 34 years. About 51 % of the population is female.

The median income for a household is $ 69,752, a family of $ 79,335. The per capita income is $ 29,477. Approximately 2.1% of the population and 1.1% of families are below the poverty line.
