Application-specific standard product

As an application-specific standard product ( engl. application specific standard products, ASSP ) refers to an integrated circuit, which was designed and optimized for a very specific use case, but - is sold to various customers - as opposed to an ASIC. Unlike ASICs, which are usually designed for a very specific customer and a very special task, ASSPs are developed by different manufacturers and used by the customers in large numbers in different devices. In the design and production process, the ASSPs ASICs hardly differ, the difference is more likely to see in marketing.

This contrasts with pure standard products that can be used in a variety of applications, such as the 74xxx series. An example of ASSPs are the GSM chips in cell phones. This can only be used for communication using GSM. They are application-specific, but unlike ASICs are used by many companies.
