The Appling County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Baxley.

Geography

The county has an area of ​​1326 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Toombs County, Tattnall County, Wayne County, Pierce County, Bacon County, Jeff Davis County.

History

The County was formed on December 15, 1814 from the counties of: Bacon, Charlton, Clinch, Echols, Jeff Davis, Pierce, Ware, and Wayne County. It was named after the war hero Colonel Daniel Appling. On December 8, 1818, the foundation stone for the first courthouse was laid, which was destroyed in a fire in 1850. 1864 Baxley became the capital of the county. 1974 went to the Altamaha River in Appling County Georgia 's first nuclear power plant connected to the grid.
