Appling County, Georgia
The Appling County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Baxley.
Geography
The county has an area of 1326 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Toombs County, Tattnall County, Wayne County, Pierce County, Bacon County, Jeff Davis County.
History
The County was formed on December 15, 1814 from the counties of: Bacon, Charlton, Clinch, Echols, Jeff Davis, Pierce, Ware, and Wayne County. It was named after the war hero Colonel Daniel Appling. On December 8, 1818, the foundation stone for the first courthouse was laid, which was destroyed in a fire in 1850. 1864 Baxley became the capital of the county. 1974 went to the Altamaha River in Appling County Georgia 's first nuclear power plant connected to the grid.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Appling County 17 419 people in 6,606 households and 4,855 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 76.79 percent White, 19.59 percent Black or African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 2.49 percent from other races groups; 0.61 percent were descended from two or more races. 4.55 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,606 households out of which 34.5 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.6 percent were married couples living together, 12.5 percent were single mothers and 26.5 percent were non-families. 23.2 percent of all households and 9.8 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.04 persons.
27.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.0 percent between 18 to 24, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.8 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 97.1 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males.
The median income for a household was $ 30,266, and the median income for a family $ 34,890. Males had a median income of $ 27,753, women $ 18,148. The per capita income was $ 15,044. 14.9 percent of families and 18.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
