Apra Harbor

Apra Harbor is a natural deep water port on the Marianas island of Guam. Apra Harbor is both a commercially used as a base of the United States Navy.

Located on the west side of the island port is south of the peninsula and north Orote delimited by a reef system called Cabras Iceland. Parts of the system are man-made breakwater, called Glass Breakwater. On Orote is also the former naval air base Naval Air Station Orote Point. The inner harbor in the south is mostly used by the military, civilian operations take place in the north.

During the Second World War, Guam was captured by the United States and then expanded the harbor as a basis for further action by the Allies. Starting in 1964, then served as the basis for Apra equipped with UGM -27 Polaris SSBN classes of George Washington, Ethan Allen and Lafayette, including a permanent submarine tender was stationed there. With the departure of the USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN-601) in 1981 ended the period, served as a forward base for SSBN in the Apra. Since the beginning of the 21st century are on Guam hunting submarines, stationed, beginning with USS City of Corpus Christi ( SSN- 705), 2002. Thus can use their territories in the West Pacific reach faster than about of Pearl Harbor.

The commercial part of the harbor is administered by the government agency founded in 1975, Port Authority of Guam. Currently, the port handles about two million tons of cargo per year.
