Apricale

Apricale is an Italian town with 618 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the province of Imperia in Liguria. It is located about 15 km north of Ventimiglia in Merdanzo valley, a side valley of the Nervia. The town's name derives from the Latin Apricus ( sunlit ). Apricale part of the community association Comunità Montana Intemelia. In the vicinity of the only noteworthy DOC red wine of Liguria also grown - Rossese of Dolce Acqua.

History

Apricale was founded in the 9th century and received in 1267 the oldest independent statute in Liguria, which was created after the rule of the Counts of Ventimiglia and before the influence of the Doria family.

Attractions

The steep narrow streets of the town are characterized by covered passageways and stone arcades, which are referred to as " Carugi " in the local dialect of Ligurian. The wall paintings are works by various artists on the occasion of " Giornata dell'Affresco ", an event for fresco painting.

Around the central square of Piazza Vittorio Emanuelle II are located around the ( now called Castello della Lucertola ) San Bartolomeo 's Oratory with a Baroque facade, surmounted by a clock tower, in an elevated position, the parish church of the Purification of the Virgin Mary and the feudal castle. The bell tower is marked by striking a bicycle mounted on the roof since 2000.
