Aprilia, Lazio

Aprilia is a city in the province of Latina in the Italian region Latium, located about 68,400 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012).

Geography

Aprilia located 42 km south of Rome and 27 km northwest of Latina.

It lies between the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Alban hills in the Pontine plain. Aprilia to include the districts of Campo Verde, Campo Leone, Campo di Carne and Carano. In the district of Buon Riposo the ancient longula was excavated.

The municipality covers an altitude 7-162 m slm

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 3 (slightly endangered).

The neighboring municipalities are clockwise Nettuno (RM ), Anzio (RM ) Ardea (RM ), Ariccia (RM ), Lanuvio (RM ), Velletri (RM ), Cisterna di Latina and Latina.

Traffic

Aprilia is connected to the long distance network with the state road SS 148 Pontina from Rome to Terracina.

In Campo Leone Scalo is the Campo Leone station on the railway line Roma - Formia -Naples. Is the Aprilia station on the provincial railway line Rome - Nettuno FR8.

History

Aprilia was the fourth town founded in the drained since 1930 Pontine Marshes by Littoria, Sabaudia and Pontinia. The city was founded on April 25, 1936 by Benito Mussolini and officially inaugurated on 29 October 1937. It got its name from its founding month of April, or from Venus Aprilia, the fertile Venus.

1944 Aprilia was bombed by the advancing Allies. Only after the Second World War, the transformation of the city from the center of agriculture began in the industrial city.

Policy

Domenico D' Alessio ( Partito Socialista Italiano) was elected in June 2009 for the mayor. His alliance of civil lists also with 18 of 30 seats, the majority in the City Council. His predecessor Calogero Santangelo ( center-right list ) was elected for the second time as mayor in May 2006. After the January 2009 19 councilors spoke out to him the distrust, Santangelo resigned, paving the way for new elections on 6/7 June 2009 release.

Domenico D' Alessio died suddenly on 26 February, 2012. He is represented until a new election of Antonio Terra.
