Arabo

Arabo (Armenian Արաբօ; * 1863 as Stepanos Mchitarjan in Kurter in Bitlis, Bitlis Vilayet, Ottoman Empire, † 1893 between Hinis and Muş ), also known as Arakel, was an Armenian freedom fighters of the late 19th century and one of the first fedayeen; he assisted in the defense of indigenous Armenians against the troops of the Ottoman state.

Life

Arabo studied at the Convent School in Arakeloz Musch. Since the late 1880s, he headed Armenian Fedayeen units of Sasun and Taron against the oppression of the Armenians in the six vilayets by Sultan Abdulhamid II. In 1892 he was arrested by the Turkish authorities and sentenced to 15 years in prison, but he managed to escape from prison and continue his activities as Fedai.

Arabo was in 1893 in a battle against Kurdish gangs ( Eskiya ) on the way from Chnus by Musch ( Western Armenia) killed.
