Aracaju train crash

The railway accident of Aracaju of 20 March 1946, a derailment and the worst railway accident that ever occurred in Brazil. 185 dead and 300 injured were the result.

Starting position

The accident occurred in Aracaju in Sergipe on a railroad track in the Viação Férrea Federal do Leste Brasileiro. The train was about 1,000 travelers from Aracaju to Capela go. Behind Aracaju led the route over a steep slope from the coast in the higher-lying hinterland.

Circumstances of the accident

The locomotive, baggage car and three passenger cars derailed between Laranjeiras and Riachuelo, near engenho Pedrinhas at kilometer 458 in the gradient.

Follow

Most of the victims were crushed while in the car. Many corpses were so mangled that they could no longer be identified. The train crew fled the scene of an accident, because relatives and travelers threatened to lynch it.
