Arad County (former)

The county Arad ( Arad Vármegye Hungarian, Romanian Comitatul Arad, Latin comitatus Aradiensis or comitatus Orodiensis ) was an administrative unit ( county, county ) of the Kingdom of Hungary. Today, the main part of the area in Romania ( in Arad County ) is a small part of the south of the city Békéscsaba part of Hungary (today in Békés county ).

It bordered on the county Békés, Bihar, Torda - Aranyos, Hunyad, Krassó - Szörény, Temes, Torontal and Csanád.

Geography

The eastern part of the county was mountainous country, the western flat, treeless and after the Tisza towards marshy. The county was traversed by the rivers Maros in the south and the White Screaming in the north. The majority of inhabitants were Romanians, in addition, there were also Hungarian and German, the economic production was heavily on agriculture and forestry aligned (wheat, barley, rye, rapeseed, corn, tobacco, wood, flax, fruit, wine and cattle - and beekeeping. to the west even iron mining was carried out in Borossebes, Dezna, Zimbro and other places.

History

The Arad County began in the 11th century. Later it belonged to the so-called Partium. After the occupation by the Ottomans in the area came in the 16th century to Eyalet Timisoara, after the reconquest of the territory were parts of the county from 1744 to 1750 a part of the Military Frontier, after which it was again part of the Kingdom of Hungary.

In the administrative reform in 1876, the northern county Zaránd was incorporated.

After the end of World War I in 1918, the county was after the removal of the majority of the territory of Romania in the Treaty of Trianon to a reform in 1923 with the capital of Elec. After that, it was until 1945 part of the county Csanád - Arad - Torontál and then came to the big Komitatsreform 1950, when it became part of today's Békés county, for county Csanád.

The Romanian part of the former county went to 1920 in Arad county.
