Arafura Games

The Arafura Games are a sporting competition, held since 1991 every two years in Darwin ( Australia). There will, as in the Olympics, competitions in various sports instead. It was only targeted at the Asia-Pacific region, but this has now changed.

To Arafura Games 2001 3.100 athletes from 25 nations participated. 2003, the games were canceled due to the SARS virus. The eighth games took place from 12 to 19 May 2007, and included for the second time also competitions for disabled, similar to the Paralympics.

The ninth Games were held from 9 to 16 May 2009. Tenth games were from 06 to 14 May 2011 Pre place. The eleventh, next Games take place from 11 to 18 May 2013 Darwin instead.

The name comes from the Arafura Games Arafura Sea, which lies between Australia and Southeast Asia. It forms the center of the original catchment area.
