The Araguaia River is a left tributary of the Rio Tocantins. With 2198 km in length, it is one of the major rivers of Brazil. Its course forms the boundary of several Brazilian states. The name means in the Tupi language "river of Aras ".

The Araguaia rises in the Mato Grosso plateau in the state of Goiás, near the tri-border region of Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso west of the GO -341 and the boundary of Parque Nacional das Emas.
