Arandis is a town with 5100 inhabitants in a constituency Arandis in the Erongo Region, Namibia. Arandis lies in a plane between Rössingbergen in the southwest and Klanbergen in the east, around 60 km north-east of Swakopmund.
Over and above the national road B2 for the location good transport links. In addition to the Arandis airport are located in the place nor a hospital and various small businesses. Arandis lies on the railway line Swakopmund - Windhoek.
History
The city was built by Rössing Uranium Limited 1972 for its employees in which only 15 km away in Rössing Mine and is a pure mining town. 1992 Arandis from Rössing Group on the occasion of two years earlier, won the country's independence was passed as a " gift" to the Namibian government.
Since 1994/1995 Arandis has the status of a city.
Economy
Currently, the working population of the city is almost entirely employed at Rössing. To date, the city is therefore economically completely from the Rössing Group depends on which for almost every resident in the city budget is the basis of life. Until a few years ago there was also in Arandis no shops and no gas station, so that the location on the coast Swakopmund benefited indirectly and continuously Arandis, as the inhabitants of the place spending an estimated 90 % of their disposable income in Swakopmund. As the world market prices for uranium oxide shortly after the turn of the millennium fell drastically, first the closure of the mine for the year 2007 was announced. Because the Uranoxidpreis but increased again to above average growth in the following years, the planned closure was discarded. Instead, the Group purchased even invest a further 112 million U.S. dollars to win at Arandis at least until 2021 to uranium oxide.
By 2016 Arandis wants to be a self-sufficient city and thus independent act of Rössing. Until then, the economy should be diversified with the objective of job creation in the industry ( 70 % ), education ( 20 % ) and tourism ( 5%).
Local Politics
In the 2010 local elections the following official final result was determined. The turnout was 40.7 %.
Educational institutions
Arandis has two state primary schools and one private secondary school. These and the Math and Science Center as well as the mining and technology institute supported or maintained by Rössing.
