Aratika

Aratika is an atoll of the Tuamotu Archipelago in French Polynesia. The atoll belongs administratively to the municipality of Fakarava. Aratika located 34 km north-east of Kauehi and 47 km north- northeast of Fakarava. The shape of the atoll is like a butterfly, it reaches an area of ​​20.8 × 10.7 km. The deep, 145 km ² lagoon has two navigable access to the sea.

History

Aratika discovered in 1722 by Jakob Roggeveen for Europe, but to land without being there. He named the island " Carl Hoff ".

The atoll was hit on September 3, 1839 by Charles Wilkes as part of a research expedition.

The most important town on the island is Paparara, on the atoll there is a private airfield, which opened in 1998. Aratika was purchased by the Fourcade Company.
