Arauca, Arauca
Arauca ( completely Villa de Santa Bárbara de Arauca ) is the capital of the eponymous province in Colombia.
Location
The city lies on the River Arauca directly on the border with Venezuela. The international bridge connects Venezuela José Antonio Páez (El Amparo de Apure ) and Colombia at this point. The area of the city is flat and is often flooded.
History
The Arauca region was by the German explorer Georg Hohermuth of Speyer (Spanish: Jorge de la Espira ) 1536 explored. This was in search of El Dorado and therefore did not. These were followed by the Jesuits and founded the first settlements.
The city of Arauca was on December 4, 1780 by Juan Isidro Daboín in the field of an indigenous settlement ( called Guahibo ) founded by 10 families. The city was named after the river Arauca.
Since 1915, Arauca is the seat of the Diocese of Arauca.
