Araucana chickens ( also Araucans, Araucanians or Araucana ) belong to a chicken race whose origin has not been established with certainty. With the dwarf Araucana also a recognized bantam breed which is managed by the same special club like the Araucana exists.

This breed is not to be confused with Ameraucana chickens and green installers.

Origin

Your name is derived from the Araucanians (former name of the Mapuche people ) in which they are first documented in 1890 as a semi- wild chickens. The former range of this chicken race went on for Chile to Brazil.

A report by the journal Nature, according to the DNA of this chicken has a very close resemblance to chickens from Polynesia, which - together with other evidence - would indicate that Polynesian navigators visited at least 100 years before Christopher Columbus South America.

Features

The weight of the Araucana chicken is the cock at 2-2.5 kg and in the female at 1.6-2 kg (data for large breed). The running color is Willow Green Light to pastures green or black olive (depending on color shock). The animals have a good egg performance and a good carcass. A dwarf form is available in eight shades of color.

Araucanahühner can have a jaw and throat beard. In the purebred state they are tailless, that is, they lack not only the tail feathers, but also caudal vertebrae, as well as the preen gland.

In the purebred state they have a pea comb. Bommel and Tuffs, a unique under house chickens Kopfbefiederung of skin warts in the ears, are possible. The eggs colors are blue to turquoise.

Breeding Notes

This rugged and quiet breed has no special conditions on the attitude. However, the food should not be sticky or mushy because the beards and bobble stick easily and so tempted to feather pecking.
