Araure is a Venezuelan city, administrative headquarters of the district Araure, in the state of Portuguesa.

History

During a trip to Spain in 1692, presented the capuchin Fray Ildefonso de Zaragoza before a petition to the King to get assistance for the construction of a mission for the various Indian tribes of this Llanos region. The Consejo de Indias has investigated the case and where the king 's consent.

The captain-general of the province of Venezuela José Ramírez de Arellano commissioned to accompany his troops Ildefonso de Zaragoza and assist in the establishment of a village.

On 5 December 1813, the Araure battle took place near Araure. At the " Laguna de los Muertos " ( Totensee ) the independence forces were able to defeat the royal army.
