The Aravalligebirge is a mountain range in North West India. It runs on almost 600 kilometers southwest-northeast direction from the far north of the state of Gujarat all over Rajasthan as far as Haryana ( transition into the swing basin).
It is a very ancient mountain range, whose orogeny took place in Proterozoic already 2 billion years ago. The highly fissured rock is divided into two subgroups: the south the higher Sambhar - Sirohi Mountains, in the north of the fragmented in individual mountains, flatter Sambhar - Khetri Mountains. Geologically it is a remnant of the oldest mountain folds of the Indian subcontinent. Only a few peaks are higher than 1,000 meters. The highest peak is the 1722 meter high Guru Sikhar near the town of Mount Abu. Moreover, represent those climate and watershed between the Thar Desert in the west and the east and southeast,, fertile plains of Rajasthan, the Aravalligebirge
Since the Aravalligebirge is rich in mineral resources, in them much mining activity, often illegally. This contributes to the erosion of the mountains, which in turn accelerates the spread of the Thar Desert of Rajasthan and the water supply at risk.
