Arawan languages

The Arawa languages ​​(. Named after the single language Arawa; engl Arauan ) are an indigenous South American language family, which consists of six individual languages ​​with relatively few speakers ( in square brackets, the ISO 639-3 code is specified):

  • Paumarí [pad ] (200 speakers, ethnic population about 600 )
  • Madi; divided into three dialects: Jarawara (also: Jaruára ) [ jap ] (150 speakers)
  • Jamamadí [ jaa ] (about 190 speakers)
  • Banawa [ bnh ] ( 80 speakers)
  • Deni [ dny ] (approx. 1,000 speakers)
  • Kulina (also: Culina, Madiha / Madija ) [ cul ] (about 2,500 people )

All these languages ​​are native to Brazil, only the Kulina is also spoken in Perú.

The Arawa languages ​​are not to be confused with the Arawak languages.
