Árbær

Árbær is the largest open air museum in Iceland. It emerged from a farm of that name, which was a riding stage from Reykjavík, but is now within the city limits.

About 30 historical buildings have been translocated from the capital and other parts of the country and rebuilt in the area. Frequently there show craftsmen at retirement age its art, such as goldsmith, printer, or fishing.

A sod church is still occasionally used for weddings. In another house with a printing workshop the only printing press is shown with the in Iceland ever money was printed ( in World War II ). Here is also one of only two steam locomotives that were in Iceland ever in operation, the Pioner. See also: Rail transport in Iceland

On the museum grounds there is a cafe.

The museum is open in the winter time for groups only ( by appointment).
