Arbeo of Freising

Arbeo of Freising (also Aribo of Freising or Arbo of Freising, * 723 or earlier in Merano, † May 4 784 ) was bishop of Freising.

Arbeo is assigned to the Uradelsgeschlecht the Huosi or the early Aribonen. He entered the Benedictine Order and was educated at the Latin School. Presbyter and notary under Bishop Joseph of Verona, he was 763 abbot of the newly founded monastery Scharnitz. 764 He succeeds Bishop Joseph of Freising. Under his leadership, the monasteries of San Candido in Val Pusteria ( 769 ) Schaeftlarn ( 762 ) and Schliersee in Bavaria ( 779 ) were established. 772 Bishop moved Arbeo the monastery Scharnitz to Schlehdorf on Lake Kochel.

It is variously Arbeo, considered the first writer of German origin, identified as the author of Codex Abrogans.

He is also the founder of the Freising Cathedral Library and the author of " Vita Corbiniani ", a biography about the life and work of St. Korbinian, the valuable information on the early history Bavarian delivers on its biographical character addition.

Arbeo was buried in Freising. His feast day in the Catholic Church is May 4
