Arbetaren

Arbetaren ( Eng.: The worker ) is a weekly Swedish anarcho-syndicalist newspaper.

The magazine was founded in 1922 and run by the Swedish Trade Union Sveriges Arbetares Central Organisation ( SAC) issued. It has a circulation of 3800 copies ( 2007).

History

After the establishment of the SAC 1910, the publication of a newspaper was planned. After initial difficulties, the union newspaper syndicalists could be published with a circulation of 5,000 copies in 1911. The newspaper was published weekly from 1913, from 1917 twice in the week, reaching in 1920 a circulation of 14,000 copies.

Early in 1920 he decided to establish a daily newspaper, which should also appeal to non- unionists. On January 2, 1922 as the first issue of Arbetaren and was immediately awarded the second strongest Stockholm newspaper. The circulation increased in the 20s on up to 23,000 copies, among other things, due to the rise of the trade union movement. In the 20's especially the Sacco and Vanzetti affair was discussed, and Benito Mussolini and the Soviet Union criticized. Many well-known Swedish writers wrote for the Arbetaren workers poems, including Harry Martinson, Nils Ferlin and Eyvind Johnson. Stig Dagerman was cultural editor and wrote until his death in 1954 a weekly verse - the Dagers dagsedlar - for the newspaper. Later, many authors started their writing career with contributions in Arbetaren, including Per Wästberg.

1933 had Arbetaren journalist Frid Nordin for three months in jail after he named Hermann Goering in an issue of Arbetaren a " bloodhound ". The newspaper was precipitated together with Göteborgs Handels -och Sjöfartstidning and Trots! the leading anti- Nazi voice in Sweden. The Arbetaren was confiscated by the authorities about 40 times and had in 1941 its highest circulation of nearly 30,000 copies.

In the postwar period, the newspaper lost many readers and was from the 50s appear only once a week. In the 70 years of the fight against nuclear power plants took up a large value. Today, the climate problem is discussed next labor disputes. The Arbetaren 2007 had a circulation of about 3,800 copies.
