Arc-sous-Cicon

Arc- sous- Cicon is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Arc- sous- Cicon is located on 793 m, about 16 km north of the town of Pontarlier (air line). The village is located in the Jura, in a closed basin at the northern foot of the Cret Monniot, in the hills east of the valley of the Loue.

The area of ​​28.49 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the French Jura. The main part of the area occupied by the basin of Arc, which has a width of 2.5 km and a length of 6 km and is on average 800 m. It is mainly composed of meadow and pasture land, but also shows some marshy areas. The basin has no significant above-ground rivers, because the rainwater seeps into the karst underground. Flanked the basin of Arc on all sides by forested hills. In the north are the heights of La Côte ( 957 m) and the hill of Cicon. In the south of the basin is dominated by the broad ridge of the Cret Monniot, on the 1141 m the highest peak of Arc- sous- Cicon is achieved. This ridge forms an anticlinal folds of the Jura and is oriented southwest-northeast direction according to the strike of the mountains in this region. The summit area is covered by pastures.

At Arc- sous- Cicon addition to the actual site also includes several hamlets and numerous individual farms, including:

  • Le Plaimbois (830 m) on the eastern edge of the basin of Arc

Neighboring communities of Arc- sous- Cicon are Nods and Passonfontaine in the north, Longemaison and Gilley to the east, La Chaux in the south and Aubonne and Chasnans in the West.

History

The area of Arc was taken and settled cultivation in the 11th century. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the dominions Cicon and Château Vieux. Together with the Franche -Comté it came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The village church of Arc- sous- Cicon was built in the 19th century. From the second half of the 17th century, the Château dates. In the village are farmhouses dating from the 17th to 19th centuries in traditional Franche-Comté style have been preserved. At the western entrance to the basin of Arc is the chapel Vau - Navier.

Population

With 657 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Arc- sous- Cicon is one of the small communities of the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1891 980 persons were still counted ), a slight population growth was recorded since the early 1990s again.
