Archaeological Society of Athens
The Archaeological Society at Athens (in Greek Η Εν Αθήναις Αρχαιολογική Εταιρεία I En Athines Archeologiki Eteria, in English proper name Archaeological Society at Athens, and Greek Archaeological Society ) is a device Founded in 1837 to preserve the ancient heritage in Greece.
History and tasks
On the initiative of the merchant Baron Konstantinos Bellio (or Vellios ) was founded on January 6, 1837 by a group of scholars and politicians of the young state the Archeologiki Eteria. The aim was to secure an inventory, localization, re-establishment and restoration of the legacies of ancient Greece. As an independent scientific society they now support the Greek government in conservation and study of Greek Antiquities.
Research
Under the leadership of Archeologiki Eteria the Acropolis a first restoration of the Parthenon, the excavations of the Dionysos Theatre, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the tower of the winds were in the early years of ambitious projects in parts excavated, made performed.
Between 1854 and 1894, the research and excavations of Kerameikos, Hadrian's Library and the Roman Agora in Athens joined. Numerous studies devoted to archaeological sites in Attica, in Boeotia, the Peloponnese and the Cyclades. In the same period many individual museums were founded in Athens, whose stocks have been combined to the National Archaeological Museum later.
Publications
The Company publishes various magazines that serve the publication of archaeological research and excavations in Greece. Since 1837 the internships tes en Athenaïs Archaiologikes Hetaireias appear ( Πρακτικά της εν Aθήναις Aρχαιολογικής Eταιρείας, Proceedings of the Archaeological Society). The Archaiologike Ephemeris ( Aρχαιολογική Eφημερίς ) Also since 1837 appears. 1955 was sparked off another magazine to life with the Ergon To tes Archaiologikes Hetaireias ( Έργον της Aρχαιολογικής Eταιρείας, The Work of the Archaeological Society), the short reports on the excavations of the company publishes. Also dedicated mainly the work of the Society is the monographic series Libraries tes en Athenaïs Archaiologikes Hetaireias ( Βιβλιοθήκη της εν Αθήναις Αρχαιολογικής Εταιρείας, The Library of the Archaeological Society at Athens).
