Archaeological Society of Athens

The Archaeological Society at Athens (in Greek Η Εν Αθήναις Αρχαιολογική Εταιρεία I En Athines Archeologiki Eteria, in English proper name Archaeological Society at Athens, and Greek Archaeological Society ) is a device Founded in 1837 to preserve the ancient heritage in Greece.

History and tasks

On the initiative of the merchant Baron Konstantinos Bellio (or Vellios ) was founded on January 6, 1837 by a group of scholars and politicians of the young state the Archeologiki Eteria. The aim was to secure an inventory, localization, re-establishment and restoration of the legacies of ancient Greece. As an independent scientific society they now support the Greek government in conservation and study of Greek Antiquities.

Research

Under the leadership of Archeologiki Eteria the Acropolis a first restoration of the Parthenon, the excavations of the Dionysos Theatre, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus and the tower of the winds were in the early years of ambitious projects in parts excavated, made ​​performed.

Publications

The Company publishes various magazines that serve the publication of archaeological research and excavations in Greece.
