Archduke Charles Joseph of Austria (1745–1761)

Karl Joseph von Habsburg-Lothringen ( born 1 February 1745 in Vienna, † 18 January 1761 in Vienna) was Archduke of Austria.

Life

Archduke Charles Joseph Emanuel Johann Nepomuk Anton Prokop von Habsburg-Lothringen was born on February 1, 1745 as the seventh child and second son of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and her husband Franz Stephan of Lorraine in Vienna.

Unlike his older brother Joseph, the later Emperor Joseph II, he was an extrovert and open-minded. Very soon, the boy became the favorite son of his parents and won with his charm and intelligence, the affection and respect of his siblings and the entire court. The preference for Karl Joseph by Maria Thersia fueled rivalry between the brothers.

Karl Joseph was supposed to succeed his father as Duke of Tuscany, but he fell ill at the age of fifteen years of smallpox and died.

Karl Joseph is buried in the Imperial Crypt in Vienna. His heart was buried separately and is located in the heart of the Habsburg crypt in the Loreto chapel, Vienna St. Augustine's Church.

After his older brother's death, took two years younger Archduke Leopold, the future Emperor Leopold II of Austria, the place as his father's successor Francis I as Duke of Tuscany one. Originally Archduke Charles Joseph Maria Ludovica of Spain was to marry, but his early death prevented the marriage and Archduke Leopold took the Bourbon princess to wife.
