Toxotes jaculatrix

The archer fish ( Toxotes ) live in the tropical Indo-Pacific from India to the Philippines, Australia to Polynesia in coastal sea water, brackish and fresh waters, mostly in mangroves. It took its name " shoot down " the ability of a targeted jet of water sitting on plant insects that fell on the water surface, are eaten by them. The 12 to 40 cm long animals live socially in small groups.

Features

The body of the archer fish is flattened laterally and 1.8 to 2.5 times longer than high. Eyes and mouth are large, the mouth terminal, with a protruding lower jaw, and far vorstülpbar ( protraktil ).
