Archibald M. Bliss

Archibald Meserole Bliss ( born January 25, 1838 in Brooklyn, New York, † March 19, 1923 in Washington DC ) was an American politician. Between 1875 and 1883 he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Archibald Meserole Bliss was born about eight years before the outbreak of the Mexican - American War in the then still independent city of Brooklyn and grew up there. During this time he attended community schools. Between 1864 and 1867 he served as Alderman in Brooklyn, where he was President of the Board of Aldermen in 1866. Politically he belonged at that time to the Republican Party. In 1867 he ran unsuccessfully for the post of mayor of Brooklyn. He took in the years 1864 and 1868 as a delegate to the Republican National Conventions in part. Between 1868 and 1878 he was President and Vice- President of the Bushwick Railroad Co. He was also director of the New York and Long Iceland Bridge Co. He was in the years 1871 and 1872 Member of the Board of Water Commissioners of Brooklyn. In 1872, he participated as a delegate to the Liberal National Convention. During the following period, he joined the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1874 Bliss was in the fourth electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Philip S. Crooke on March 4, 1875. He was re-elected three times in a row. Since he gave up for reelection in 1882, he retired after March 3, 1883 from the Congress. In 1884 he was a candidate in the fifth electoral district of New York for a congress seat. After a successful election, he resigned on March 4, 1885 the successor of Nicholas Muller. He was re-elected once. Since he gave up for reelection in 1888, he retired after March 3 in 1889 from the Congress. As a Congressman he had presided over the Committee on Pensions ( 50th Congress ). In addition, he participated in the years 1876, 1880, 1884 and 1888 at the Democratic National Convention.

Then he went up to his death on March 19, 1923 in Washington DC Real estate transactions after. His body was interred in the Cypress Hills Cemetery in Brooklyn.
