Archidamus III

Archidamus III. (C. 400 BC; † 338 BC) was a king of Sparta, of the tribe of Eurypontidae, son of Agesilaus II, led since 371 BC several times the Spartan army. He organized the resistance of Sparta against Epaminondas.

To 359/358 BC, he replaced his father Agesilaus II on the throne, as this was on an expedition to Egypt. As king, he supported the occasion of the third holy war Phocis against Thebes. From Sparta daughter Taranto 344/343 BC called in to help, he fought against Lucanians and Messapians, was 338 BC defeated and fell in the battle near Manduria at Taranto.
