Archidamus IV

Archidamus IV (Greek Ἀρχίδαμος ) was a king of Sparta, of the dynasty of Eurypontidae in the 3rd century BC He was a son of the king Eudamidas I and the Archidamia. His siblings were Agesistrata and Agesilaus.

When Archidamus had succeeded his father in the kingship, is unclear because of the kings of Sparta the Hellenistic period there is very little source material. Archidamus itself is only through confrontation with Sparta Poliorketes Demetrios in 295/4 BC known, he was defeated by the battle of Mantinea in a field. Then came Demetrios before to after Laconia, where he again beat the Spartans, of which 200 were killed and 500 taken prisoner.

The further fate of Archidamus IV, as well as year of his death are unclear. Since he was never mentioned again, his death at Mantinea is contemplated, on the other hand may be survival have in the military defeat of the loss of all the prestige and thus led to a political and historical insignificance. His son Eudamidas II followed him anyway.
