Architectural psychology

The architectural psychology tries the effect of the built environment ( interiors, buildings, open spaces, squares, etc.) to humans, to explore his condition and behavior and, moreover, to formulate conclusions for the planning and design of environments.

Main themes and professional demarcation

The architecture of psychology deals firstly with the interactions between people and their built environment. It is therefore often referred to as a branch of environmental psychology: Viewed ( ecological psychology). However, the architectural psychology focuses on the effect of buildings, interior and exterior spaces to humans in cognitive, emotional and social terms.

The criteria of architectural psychology overlap over long distances with those of living psychology. While the latter places emphasis on the human living space and the human housing needs, the former also covers other topics such as: office buildings and work spaces, nurseries and schools, hospitals and medical institutions, museums and exhibition spaces, offices and much more.

Practical relevance

Just as her sister discipline residential psychology also features the architectural psychology by a strong practical orientation and provides valuable scientific basis for architecture and interior design: starting with the design of interiors, including furnishings and color scheme, the design of buildings, including facades and outdoor areas to the planning of urban spaces, places, etc.

Interdisciplinarity

Another key feature is the high degree of interdisciplinarity - not only within the psychological disciplines (eg, social psychology, developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, color psychology, cognitive psychology, etc.), but also beyond technical, planning disciplines (architecture, interior design, urban planning, etc.). Therefore, architectural psychology forms an important link between the science of man (psychology, physiology, etc.) and the technical sciences.
