The archive for the study of modern languages ​​and literatures, the oldest of Modern Languages ​​Journal, was founded in 1846 by Ludwig Herrig and Heinrich Viehoff. The first two volumes appeared in Julius Baedeker Publisher Elberfeld and Iserlohn. After that, the magazine for 120 years from Georg Westermann Verlag Braunschweig (now Westermann printing and publishing group) has been published. Since 1979, the journal is published by Erich Schmidt Verlag, Berlin.

Established to train and develop language and literature teachers in schools and colleges and to give the modern philology adequate opportunities for publication, the journal has developed into an integrating specialized body with embossed increasingly international character. The essays smaller articles and reviews appear in German, English or Romance languages.
