Arctic Cathedral

The Evangelical Lutheran Arctic Cathedral ( norw Ishavskatedralen, actually Tromsdalen kirke ) is the landmark of the city of Tromsø and parish and Seamen's Church. It was built in 1965 and stands on the mainland side of the city.

If you drive along the E8, it is right on a small hill at the entrance. The unique architecture by Jan Inge Hovig to the northern lights, ice and darkness symbolize long. The church building is formed from stacked stylized ice sheets of aluminum cladded with concrete, forming the Church only as a complete roof construction. Standing on the church square you will find yourself in front of the west side of the church. This consists of a large clear glass front, in which there are the entrance doors. Under the pointed roof of the church is situated in the glass facade of a large white cross that can be seen from far away.

The back wall ( east side ) of the church consists of a 140 m² large stained glass window that was designed in 1972 by Victor Sparre in Dallglas technique. The picture is called "The Return of Jesus " and is one of the largest stained glass in Europe.
