Ardagh ( Irish: Ardach, older Ardachadh, "high field ") is a village in County Longford, Ireland.

Large parts of the city have been built in the 19th century as a detached settlements and have received several awards for the successful revitalization, such as the Prix d' Honneur of the Entente Florale and winning the Irish Tidy Towns Competition in 1989, 1996 and 1998.

Ardagh was once the seat of the diocese of Ardagh, today it is Longford.

History and Mythology

The place is famous because of some pre-Christian and Christian archaeological sites. So to have the Church of St. Mel ( Cathedral of St. Mel ) built in the 5th century and founded as a bishopric of St. Patrick of Ireland. In Ardagh 's Heritage Centre, an exhibition of historic sites is collected.

In the vicinity of the hill Bri Leith is ( "Hill of Horror ", Slieve Callory ) that should have been according to Irish mythology, the seat of the god Midir, as part of the "other world".
