Ardennes-Verdun dynasty

The Wigeriche are one of the oldest verified European noble families. Its origin dates back to the progenitor Wigerich (around 900, † before 919), Count Palatine of Lorraine and Count in Bidgau.

The names that were added to the dynasty, however, change in the historiography: eg Ardennes Count and Count of Verdun. End of the 10th century, the Wigeriche received the title of duke of Lower Lorraine and Upper Lorraine. In the 10th and 11th centuries they were involved in the counties of Luxembourg, Hainaut, Verdun, Bar and Ardennes as well as to the margravates Antwerp and Brabant Gaugrafschaft ( Ename ).

Collateral line of the family is the still existing house Salm.
