Ardre image stones

The Bildstein

The image stone dates from the 11th century and is equipped with 2.1 m of considerable but not extreme size. In the top field, Odin rides the horse Sleipnir gods to Valhalla, including a ship and on the right some only with difficulty recognizable scenes. The lower left part of the picture stone take a scene from the Wieland saga.

The crate stones

Unique christian are the two slightly damaged, decorated in Urnes style box skillful stones that belong to a grave box and are dated to the 11th or 12th century. One shows a vine and Snake ornament, the other Saint Christopher with the Christ child on her back as he walks about dragons and monsters that symbolize paganism. The traces of color still well preserved made a reconstruction of the painting possible. The runic inscription reads: "Sons Liknats ( could make ) a beautiful monument for Ailika, the good wife, mother. ( God and the Mother of God 's grace ) for them, and those who made the monument ( the largest that ) will see people. "

The Runestone Ardre III

He is one of the few specimens of its kind on Gotland. He also dates from the 11th or 12th century and is 72 cm rather small. Rune stones came with the Christianization of Gotland ( Hogrän, Sjonhem ). Although the stones retained the traditional forms of Stones, the decoration leaned on the mainland Urnes style. The Ardre Stone is perhaps the most recent of these rune stones. From the tangled animals of the Urnes style a Gotland variant has emerged. And it is uncertain whether they are a Christian rock, because neither the snake motif, on the one hand one, the two monsters on the other side, nor the text can be seen Christian motifs.

The text reads: " Ottar and Gairvat and Aivat, put the stone for Liknat, her father. Radjalv and Gairnieut, created a beautiful memorial to a good man. Likraiv carved the runes. "
