Arenberg Castle, Salzburg

Arenberg Castle (originally Castle Bürglstein ) lies on the right bank of the Salzach in Salzburg, more precisely between the Arenbergstraße (the former exterior stone alley ) and the Bürglsteinstraße in the district of Outer stone at the foot of the Bürglsteins, a small mountain, which is not only the castle, but also the area its name.

History

In the 14th century the castle is documented as a witness in the possession of the Lords of Keutzl. In the 16th century it was inhabited by the Lords of Pirglstein and later the Lords of Rehling. In the 17th century the castle was purchased by Archbishop Johann Ernst von Thun 1695 the Ursuline gave it as homestead. The location turned out to be very suitable. Therefore, the nuns moved into the Gstättengasse ( foundation stone was laid in 1699, completed in 1720 ); the castle served now as a teaching facility for the Alumnate the seminary.

1791 bought the nurseryman Sebastian Rosengger the estate. He designed the park to a popular destination Salzburg. Later he gave it to his son, the businessman and amateur archaeologist Josef Rosengger on. 1792 Rosengger discovered during excavation work for the new park a large Roman cemetery. He could hold many Roman grave goods. At that time, the scale of Rosengger in the English style, sprawling palace grounds which the Bürglsteinfelsen that involved, for miles around praised and popular destination for Salzburg and strangers. 1861 bought Sophie Princess of Arenberg, née Princess of Auersperg, the castle and converted it further. She combined the two three-storey buildings rose Eggers by a central tract. From 1912 to 1922, the building served as a residence for the writer and philosopher Hermann Bahr and his wife Anna Bahr - Mildenburg, opera singer and co-founder of the Salzburg Festival. In 2001 bought the non-profit Foundation Salzburg of the American Austrian Foundation Schloss Arenberg in order to create an international conference center for doctors, scientists and artists here. In the park of the castle many important sculptures are exhibited.

On April 20, 2009, triggered by welding fire destroyed the roof of the building. He was repaired.
