Arend Lijphart

Arend Lijphart ( born August 17, 1936 in Apeldoorn, Netherlands) is one of the best known and most influential political scientists of our time. He possesses both the Dutch and the American citizen. 1963 doctorate in Lijphart Yale and taught and researched recently at the University of California, San Diego. There he became Professor Emeritus in 2001.

Lijphart's research field is comparative politics. He became known in the German-speaking world, especially through his studies "Democracies " and "Patterns of Democracy ," in which he between two prototypical forms of democracy, namely the consensus democracy and competitive democracy is different.

Honors

Lijphart 1989 was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences from 1995 to 1996, he was also the president of the American Political Science Association. In 1997, Lijphart the prestigious Johan Skytte Prize for Political Science. In 2001 Lijphart an honorary doctorate from the university was " for his outstanding scientific achievements ," awarded suffering.
