Ares Galaxy

Ares Galaxy is a free file sharing client for the Ares network. It was programmed in Delphi and runs on Microsoft Windows.

History

The network protocol used is similar, according to the developers Fast Track, which is used among other things in Kazaa. At the start of development in 2002, a Gnutella -like protocol still was used; after six months of development, however, was changed.

In January 2006, Ares was behind eMule the second most downloaded program in sourceforge.

In April 2006, the Ares network consisted of about 1.0 million simultaneous users.

Features

  • Downloads from multiple sources
  • Remote chat system Connect by Hostname or contacts known by swapping
  • IRC -like system with rooms, each user can host a room in the decentralized network

Because Ares and Gnutella use the same hash function for the distributed hash table can be a file in two networks exchange parallel with giFT.

Ares is, like Kazaa, especially for exchange of smaller files such as music or video clips. This is, inter alia, due to the fragmentation into relatively small file pieces ( chunks ) in the exchange (usually about 256 kB), leading to significant speed gains especially in multi-sourcing, since it can be loaded from more users simultaneously.
