Aretes

Arete (Greek Ἀρέτης ) was a Macedonian horseman commander of Alexander the Great in the 4th century BC.

By Waldemar Heckel Arete is identified with one occurring in the Battle of the Granicus in 334 BC warrior named " Areti " who had tried in vain there fighting to pass his lance to Alexander after his lance was broken.

Certainly, however, at the Battle of Gaugamela occurs Arete to 331 BC, where he commanded the unit of lancers ( sarissophoroi ) on the right wing as flank protection for the Hetairenreiterei. During the fight, his department and the Paionians under Ariston were detailed to support the heavy cavalry of the embattled mercenaries Menidas. Arete had been taken over command of the Lancer at an undisclosed time of Proto Machos, who had led at the Battle of Issus in 333 BC. From him is reported anything after Gaugamela.
