Aretha Louise Franklin ( born March 25, 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee) is an American soul singer and pianist. It is also called the "First Lady of Soul" or "Queen of Soul". In the 2008 published by the music magazine Rolling Stone list of 100 greatest singers of all time she stands on the first place.
Aretha Franklin was born on 25 March 1942 in Memphis, Tennessee. Her father, Clarence LaVaughn Franklin was a famous Baptist preacher in the United States. Aretha grew up with four siblings in the industrial city of Detroit ( Michigan ) on. Very early on she came through her father with the music in touch. She sang with her two sisters Carolyn and Erma in the choir of New Bethel Baptist Church of her father. Famous musicians and singers such as Mahalia Jackson, Sam Cooke, Clara Ward and the Ward Sisters appeared at the services. Singing and piano lessons took Aretha with James Cleveland.
In 1956 they released their first LP, a gospel album. At the age of 18 she began to also include pop music in addition to gospel music. When Columbia Records in 1960 released her first pop album. Although the LP was unsuccessful, but she opened her new career as a club singer. In 1967 she moved to Atlantic Records and created there the same breakthrough with their first single I Never Loved A Man ( The Way I Love You ), which sold over one million copies. After her appearance in the film Blues Brothers 1980, she moved to Arista Records and was able to build on their earlier successes with other number-one hits and Grammys. Their successful albums were Jump To It (produced by Luther Vandross ), Who's Zoomin ' Who ( Narada Michael Walden produced by ) and A Rose Is Still A Rose. In her Arista years, she recorded many duets, among other things, I knew you were waiting for me with George Michael, Sisters are doing it for Themselves by Annie Lennox of the Eurythmics, Gimme Your Love by James Brown and Through The Storm with Elton John. In 1998 she jumped even for Luciano Pavarotti singing Puccini's Nessun dorma opera aria. 1999 published her autobiography From These Roots.
For her duet with Mary J. Blige Aretha Franklin was awarded in spring 2007 at the 50th Grammy Awards their 20th Grammy Award. 2008 she released her first Christmas album This Christmas Aretha. On 20 January 2009 she sang at the inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama about two million people. Appeared in 2011 on their own label Aretha 's Records A Woman Falling Out Of Love.
