Arevalo, Iloilo City

Arevalo is one of six districts of Iloilo City, the capital of the province of Iloilo, which is located on the island of Panay in the Western part of the Visayas in the Philippines.

La Villa de Arevalo, was founded in 1581 by the Spanish General Gonzalo Ronquillo de Peñalosa as a municipality, to the glory of his old home town of Avila in Spain. It was Christianized by Augustinian priests and was once considered one of the largest suburbs in the southern part of Panay, known for its fine beaches and natural landscapes. In 1600, the township was occupied for a short period of Muslim pirates from Mindanao, 1614 again attacked by the Dutch conquerors who were eventually expelled by the Spanish colonial army.

Since 1937 Arevalo is a city district of Iloilo City. He now has a university and several public schools.

Main attractions are the old churches and colonial buildings, and the numerous resorts on the beach Villa Beach.
