Arezzo Cathedral

The Cathedral of Arezzo ( Cattedrale di Ss. Pietro Donato e ) in the Tuscan town of Arezzo is the Episcopal Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Arezzo - Cortona - Sansepolcro.

History

The grave of the second Bishop of Arezzo and martyr Donatus († 362) was on the Colle del Pionta outside the city walls. There, the earliest Christian places of worship of Arezzo and the first cathedral arose. In 1203, Pope Innocent III. the laying of the cathedral in the city. Construction began in 1278, lasted until the completion of 1511th The present façade was not created until 1900 to 1914 after plans by Dante Viviano.

On January 10, 1276, Pope Gregory X died on the return journey by the Second Council of Lyons in Arezzo. He donated on his deathbed a considerable sum for the new cathedral and was buried in it.

In the spring of 1796 central Italy was rocked by a series of earthquakes. Their end wrote to the people of Arezzo the intercession of the Mother of God, whose image had become rußgeschwärztes ceramic bright white in a guest house on February 15, 1796 before the eyes of several worshipers. The statue was brought to the cathedral, and in the following years was built on the north aisle the Cappella della Madonna del Conforto, still a much visited pilgrimage and worship.

Architecture

Arezzo Cathedral is a Gothic three-aisled basilica without transept. The five bays of the nave are divided by clustered piers and wear ribbed vault. To the north of the choir is the slim, hexagonal Campanile.

The cathedral contains many important works of art from Gothic and Renaissance. The seven -part cycle of Guillaume de Marcillat from the years 1516-1524 is regarded as an outstanding work of stained glass. The main altar with the Marmorretabel St. Donatus dates from the 14th century. The baptismal font is decorated with reliefs of Donatello 's workshop. The choir stalls created by Giorgio Vasari 1554th on 1330 the Cenotaph Guido Tarlatis by Agostino di Giovanni and Agnolo di Ventura is dated. The fresco of Maddalena in the left aisle created Piero della Francesca in the 1460s. The Cappella Ubertini contains frescoes of the Legend Marie which are Gregorio Donato di Arezzo attributed ( early 14th century ). The Enthroned Madonna with Child is dated into the 1260er years.

Chapel of the Madonna del Conforto

The neo-classical, neo-Gothic partially Cappella della Madonna del Conforto, three naves with dome, main and side apses, designed Giuseppe del Rosso. Organs

In the cathedral of Arezzo, there are two organs.

The oldest instrument was built in the mid 16th century by the organ builder Luca di Bernardino da Cortona. The purely mechanical instrument has 9 stops on one manual work ( Principale 16 ' ottava 8', Decimaquinta 4 ', Decimanona, Vigesimaseconda 2', Vigesimasesta e Vigesimanona, Flauto in XV 4 ', Rosignoli, Cornamusa, tremolo dolce ). The pedal is attached.

The main organ was built in 2006 by the organ builder Pinchi. The instrument has sliderchest register 26 ( 1,720 pipes ) on two manuals and pedal. The Spieltrakturen are mechanical, the Registertrakturen are electric.
