Argamum (castra)

Orgame (Greek Όργάμη; Latin Argamum ) is an ancient fortress in the Dobruja in the Danube Delta in the field of community Jurilovca, Tulcea County, Romania.

Orgame is mentioned in the late sixth century BC by Hecataeus of Miletus as a subsidiary city of Histria. The name Argamum met on an inscription to 100 AD excavations began in the years 1926 to 1932 and in 1965 resumed. They confirmed the existence of a Greek settlement, chronologically analogous to Histria.

Six kilometers from the fishing village inhabited mainly by Lipowanern Jurilovca at the high and steep bank of the lake Razim are partially exposed and restored ruins of the Greco -Roman fortress Argamum. Today, a city gate, a fortress wall, roads, early Christian basilicas and earth walls can be seen.
