Argeliers León

Argeliers León Pérez ( born May 7, 1918 in Havana, † February 23, 1993 ibid ) was a Cuban musicologist and pedagogue, folklorist and composer.

Leon studied music at the Conservatorio Municipal de La Habana, and later Education at the Universidad de La Habana. In addition, he began studies in musicology and ethnology at the Escuela de Verano University, among others with Fernando Ortiz. He also took composition lessons with José Ardèvol and in 1957/58 with Nadia Boulanger in Paris.

From 1939 to 1957 he taught harmony and composition at the Conservatorio Musical de La Habana. In 1951 he gave courses at the Escuela de Temporada in Santiago de Chile. In 1958 he became director of the Music Department of the National Library.

Since the early 1960s, he focused increasingly on the musicological research and was next to Odilio Urfé and María Teresa Linares one of the most important folklorists of Cuba. He was founding director of the Departamento de Folklore at the Teatro Nacional de Cuba and the Instituto de etnologia y Folklore of the Academy of Sciences of Cuba. Here he founded in 1968 the Department of Afro-American studies. For UNESCO, he organized symposia on African culture, etc in Nigeria, Ghana, Mali and Brazil. In 1973 he became director of the music department of the Casa de las Américas.

León was the founder and editor of a number of musicological journals such Actas de Folklore, Ethnology y Folklore, Boletín de Música de Casa de las Américas and Boletín de Música de la Biblioteca Nacional " José Martí ". In addition to numerous articles, he wrote the books Introducción sobre el estudio del arte africano and El canto y el tiempo. As a composer he wrote both symphonic and chamber works.

At León students include the musicologist and ethnologist Rogelio Martinez Fure, Olavo Alén, Jesús Gómez Cairo, Danilo Orozco, Adalberto Suco, Pedro Martínez, Jesús Guanche, Alberto Alén, Rolando Pérez, Victoria Eli, Zoila Gomez and Grizel Hernández.
