Argentat

Argentat is a French municipality with 3016 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Corrèze, in the Limousin region. Situated on the banks of the Dordogne town hosts a pretty ensemble citizens and fishermen's houses in the town center and the river. The municipality is a member of the Association of Municipalities Pays d' Argentat.

Geographical Location

Argentat is located at the junction of Route Nationale N120 over the Dordogne, in a protected climatically favored valley. About the N120 cities Brive- la- Gaillarde, in west-northwest direction and Aurillac in an east - southeasterly direction, to be reached in around 30 km away. Two kilometers above Argentat dammed a dam, the Barrage d' Argentat the river. 21 km downriver is the charming and historic village of Beaulieu -sur -Dordogne with his former Benedictine abbey. The prefecture of the department of Tulle is located about 35 km north-west slightly. The municipality is located on the western edge of the Xaintrie.

Neighboring communities of Argentat are Saint- Bazile -de- la -Roche in the north, Saint -Martial- Entraygues in the northeast, Hautefage to the east, La Chapelle -Saint- Geraud in the south, Monceaux- sur -Dordogne in the southwest, Neuville and Saint- Chamant in the west and Saint -Bonnet- Elvert in the northwest.

Population Development

History

Argentat developed in the 16th and 17th centuries into a prosperous town. Economic basis of this prosperity was the transport of oak wood for the production of wine barrels to Bergerac.

Barrage d' Argentat

The dam of Argentat serves as a hydroelectric power plant. She is the fifth of a series of dams on the upper reaches of the Dordogne. The dam is 35m high and 190m long. The equipment of the power plant are the same as those in the Rance tidal power plant in Brittany. The dam was at that time also to pilot this new type of machine.

Twinning

Argentat maintains since 1982 twinned with the town of Bad König in the Odenwald.
